New year and an opportunity to be a new you too!

Most of us either dread or look forward to making New Year’s resolutions this time of year. Perhaps those that dread it have a history of not resolving those goals to fruition and those that look forward to them might have a more successful track record.

One of my new year’s resolutions is to entice each of you into sharing your expertise in how we might provide more value to our members while we grow stronger and larger as a statewide and global organization.

One pathway to achieving this goal is by talking with you. My hope is that you won’t be too surprised when I call your line asking for your opinions, because they matter to your governing board of directors. We talk about you a lot, mostly we’re thankful that we have great membership numbers and equal ratios, but we also realize our planner members have historically less attendance than our supplier members. That’s really what we are saying here; how can we make it easier for you to attend our events in 2017?

The Board is working aggressively in teams and as a whole. The Education Team led by Megan Hazzard has received more funding to secure a more advanced level of presenters in the coming year. Our Site Selection Director Linne DiLiorio has been very successful in securing partnerships with our member properties to showcase the very best our state has to offer.

As we close out 2016 and renew ourselves over holiday gatherings with family and friends please take a moment to reach out and let a Board Member know how you want to better our organization in the coming year. If we don’t hear from you just remember I’ll be calling and I have caller ID block, just kidding! Best wishes for a Wonderful New year to everyone.

Name: Laura Hurtt
Title: Senior Sales Manager
Organization: Doubletree by Hilton Richmond-Midlothian

Best thing about job: Meeting new people daily and building lasting relationships

Volunteer positions: Co-Chair an all ladies bowling tournament that raises money for the Virginia Breast Cancer Foundation (10 years and running) G.R.I.T.S (Girls Rolling in the South), help my client at Collegiate with bag stuffing for graduates of their swimming classes

Event horror story: My biggest challenge was opening a new venue the day after Thanksgiving and hosting an Open House the first week in December.   Not realizing the number of events that would want to host parties at the facility left me and staff totally unprepared.  There was a lack of equipment and sometimes, yes, double bookings on space.  It was chaotic and hectic, but with the help of numerous vendors I had relationships with through MPI and other organizations, they pulled through and came to my rescue with equipment, linens, and even staff to help.  With the additional resources, we worked numerous holiday parties back to back and managed to survive the first Holiday Event Season.  As soon as I could catch my breath, I made sure that this would never happen again and put strategies into place to manage space accurately, develop menus that would work for a variety of parties and put together a great banquet staff.

Hobbies: Being with kids and grandchildren, gardening and being out on the lake

Husband/Wife/Kids/Pets: Jane, Children: Nichole and Justin, 4 dogs: Jazz, Sammy, Bailey and Kyleigh (all rescue dogs)

Pet Peeve: People that should not be driving on the roads
