Working with the Transgender and Genderfluid Communities
March 28, 2017 11:00 AM - 12:00
1 Clock Hour Domain A: Strategic Planning

There are many local and national events for the LGBTQ community, including many with a specific focus on those who are transgender or gender fluid. This session will give you the tools and know-how to confidently sell, market to and serve this emerging market, and will provide tips to avoid misgendering or displaying unconscious bias towards your LGBTQ guests. Our goal is to ensure that both sales and marketing teams and front line employees feel comfortable and confident serving all guests regardless of their gender identity.

Learner Outcomes:
- Discover some of the largest LGBTQ events to target as a host venue.
- Learn how NOT to display unconscious bias or misgender a guest
- Discover some best practices for successful onsite event management during a transgender or genderfluid event.

Bullets, Bad Guys, Fire & Brimstone: A Look at Risk in a Changing World
April 4, 2017 11:00 AM - 12:00 PM
1 Hour Domain C: Risk Management

The Bataclan Paris. Pulse Nightclub Orlando. Nice Bastille Day. Fort Hood Army Base. Inland Regional Center San Bernardino. The Boston Marathon. Terrorism and active shooters. Is it just a matter of time before a Meetings and Event Industry Conference appears in similar horrific headlines? What about civil unrest, controversial legislation and weather-related catastrophes such as Hurricane Katrina, the Nashville flood, Atlanta tornado? These, and other equally disruptive forces may be beyond our control but defining the role of the meeting owner or event organizer in assuring that their participants are informed and as safe as possible is not. We can't prevent every risk scenario, but shouldn't we prepare for threats even as we hope they never occur?

Learner Outcomes:
- Comprehend the magnitude of attendee safety issues; it is not just about terrorism or active shooters.
- Collaborate with suppliers and partners to customize safety tips for your event.
- Acquire resources to aid in creating plans for multiple events.

Membership

MPI – VA Chapter Member Profile -  Beth Castro

Name:
Beth Castro
Title: Executive Director
Organization: World Law Group

Summary of Role: The World Law Group, established in 1988, is one of the oldest and largest global networks of independent business law firms (currently 57 member firms) comprising more than 18,000+ legal professionals in 76 countries.  As Executive Director, I am responsible for the day-to-day operations of the organization, and work closely with the WLG President, Board and Staff Team to manage finances, employees, member programs, services and events (including our growing number of conferences) and other major activities. I also advise and support the WLG’s Board of Directors and Membership Committee.

Best thing about job: Working with people from all over the world and wearing many different hats in my role.

Volunteer positions: I serve on the Gifted Advisory Committee for my county's school system, participate in my children's sports/classrooms when possible, and help with a new charity founded by a family member to serve families who have children with Down syndrome (Shooting Stars).

Event horror story: I organize international events in cities and venues to which I don't have the opportunity to visit prior to the event.  Therefore, I've had many surprises over the years despite every attempt to minimize them.  In Turkey, we took a bus ride from the hotel to the marina where we'd board a boat for a dinner cruise.  I was told by our local team that it would be a ten to fifteen-minute ride.  Unfortunately, there was a soccer game going on at an arena between the hotel and marina.  After an hour on the bus, we finally made it to the boat, only because it switched to a closer dock.  Needless to say, people still talk about that bus ride many years later.  Thankfully we have a tight-knit group that loves to socialize with each other!

Hobbies: I spend most of my free time shuttling my kids around to their various activities, but I also enjoy exercising, traveling and spending time with friends.

Husband/Wife/Kids/Pets: I have an adventurous husband, Roque, with whom I have four children: Elle (11), Avril (9), Jackson (8) and Livia (5).  We have a dog (Beamer) and a cat (Hokie).

Pet Peeve: Perhaps because I live with a lot of kids, but whining is my biggest pet peeve at the moment!
