President's Report

Last week included a very busy and long few days for the #MPI Virginia Board of Directors at our annual planning meeting. Budgets, succesion planning, engagement plans, communications schedules, reimagined events...

At the end of the day, all of that really comes down to this... What will the MPI Virginia Chapter story be when we look back on the 2017/2018 year? And what role will you as a member of our community play in that story?

Name: Joslyn Phelps

Organization: Sheraton Virginia Beach Oceanfront Hotel, Coastal Hospitality Associates

Title: Catering Sales Manager

Best thing about job: Being able to work with my clients from start to finish on all of the details of their meeting or event. I love being able to help make the program a success and see all of the details come together.

Volunteer positions:I am the Co-Chair of the Sheraton Virginia Beach “Fun Committee” which plans monthly themed associate luncheons and other appreciation events throughout the year for our employees.

Event horror story: My horror story is from early in my hospitality career and it is a story from the very first wedding I was ever responsible for coordinating. I was a Sales Coordinator at the time and I had taken on planning smaller events for the property but when our Wedding Sales Manager left, they asked me to begin taking on some of the weddings as well. I was a little nervous already because it was my very first wedding and then suddenly, right in the middle of the ceremony, the rabbi collapsed! We immediately called for an ambulance which arrived quickly and pulled right onto the front lawn where the ceremony had been taking place. My team and I worked to keep the guests calm and out of the way of the emergency team. The rabbi was rushed to the hospital. Luckily, one of the wedding guests, who happened to be ordained, came forward and offered to finish the ceremony. He finished the very traditional ceremony flawlessly and we were able to proceed with the rest of the event. Thank goodness!!! The mother of the bride called to the hospital later in the evening and announced during the reception that the rabbi was ok. We found out that he had a stroke but he did recover!

Hobbies: Walking on the beach, hiking, bike riding, spending time with friends and family, I love trying new restaurants and traveling to places I’ve never been (I have driven across the country twice and my brother lives in Paris, so I have had the opportunity to visit Europe a few times; most recently London).

Husband/Wife/Kids/Pets:I am not married and do not have children yet but family is very important to me and I spend a lot of time with my niece and nephew.

Pet Peeve: I hate leaving my office messy at the end of the day, I have to organize before I leave!
